In 2018, we won funding from Facebook to produce a year-long weekly news series. I created and pitched Quartz News. The series aims to explain global trends through on-the-ground reporting with a voice and attitude that meets digital viewers where they live. With just six weeks to hire a team, start production, and publish our first episode, I sought to find faces, voices, and stories that were truly global. The series consistently ranked among Facebook’s top performing weekly shows, with viral hits on and off the platform. Our stories on China’s global influence earned millions of views and became the foundation for our latest series, Because China, the first we’ve created exclusively for Quartz members.
